Tot op heden heeft uitgebreid onderzoek verschuivingen in het gebruik van vaardigheden rechtstreeks gekoppeld aan technologische verandering; organisatieverandering wordt echter zelden beschouwd als een be\u00efnvloedende factor. Op basis van een panelonderzoek gebruikt dit artikel een Luhmanniaanse benadering om de relatie tussen technologische verandering en organisatorische context te begrijpen. Deze theorie wordt kwantitatief getest en toont het belang aan van het betrekken van de aard van de werkomgeving bij het bestuderen van veranderingen in vaardigheden. De resultaten laten kleine effecten zien van technologische verandering op het veranderende gebruik van vaardigheden, maar grotere effecten van veranderingen in de werkomgeving.
